Curly hair FAQ
What products do you work with in salon?
I work with 3 brands & here are my reasons for it... (please note, I am generalising and there will be exceptions to this but this is my overall experience)
Only curls was my first love & I find it great for those with curly hair (type 2C - 3A hair) and a little too heavy for anything less than 2C. This is where Mervwave came in, I was looking for a protein based product for my wavy girls and those with loose curls (2A - 2C).
I trained in cutting and styling Afro textured hair & this is where the wonderful Innersense Organic Beauty comes in to play. GREAT for all hair types from 1A all the way up to 4C hair. It really is an all rounder and the hold is outstanding!

How can I define my curls?
It depends on the reason why they're not defined, it usually will come down to a balance of moisture and protein.
You can try using products like curl creams, hydrating hair bath, using curly specialist products rather than drugstore products that have poor quality ingredients in and usually high amounts of sulphates in. You could also use a Denman brush to define the curls too then apply some curl gel & scrunch.
Should I Follow the curly girl method?
I personally don't follow the curly curl method. I take elements of it but not the strict, time consuming parts. Curls really don't have to be complicated! There are easier ways to care for your curls depending on the outcome you're after and the time you have to spend on your curly hair routine.
I'm on a budget, which are the essential curly products I need?
The products I would highly recommend to start with are;
1) A cleansing curly shampoo (shampoo twice, focus on scalp)
2) A conditioner - The heaviness of the conditioner will depend on how much moisture your hair needs.
3) A curl cream to apply while your hair is still dripping wet in the shower
4) A defining or enhancing curl gel, this can be applied in the shower or once it's been scrunched (or both)

I can personally recommend the Only Curls products as this Is what I use but whatever you do, research the products yourself and buy some smaller samples if possible to ensure your hair likes them! AND please do make sure they're good for curly hair.
What is a curly cut?
A curly cut is simply a way in which you cut the hair with the curl pattern in mind. The curly cut will create the shape of your hair as a whole, ensuring the layers are sitting correctly, each curl has been accounted for and that it all blends and there's no harsh, unwanted steps or graduation in the hair.
A curly cut sounds good but why do I need to see a curly hairdresser for that?
As a curly hairdresser, I specialise in the area of curly hair which has meant lots of extra education, lots of research and lots of practise. As a curly specialist, I don't just cut the hair in a curl friendly way, but I also have the knowledge to help with your curls, I know how to get the best out of your curls and help you on your curly hair journey so that you can harness your gorgeous natural hair texture after possible years of battling to straighten and smooth your hair. Simply put, I just get you & I am here for you!
How do I need my hair to be, to attend my curly cutting appointment?
- Please come to the salon with a day or two old washed hair. (day 1 & styled how you usually do if having a dry curly cut)
- Some product in the hair is fine but without crunch from hard gels or mousse's.
- An idea in mind of what you're wanting to come away with, keeping in mind your curl pattern and texture.
Which types of curls do you cut?
I specialise currently in types 2 & 3. This means wavy hair all the way through to tight curls.
I am newly trained in type 4 which is kinky & coily hair (as of 4th March) so watch this space as I will be offering some services to those with type 4 hair very soon!
